Almost everyone needs life insurance, but most of us would rather die than talk to a life insurance agent.

All jokes aside, as life insurance agents, we understand.

No one wants to talk about death, and we’ve all seen Groundhog’s Day, so we know our reputation proceeds us.

So how do you get an accurate term life insurance quote without speaking to a pesky life insurance agent? Well we have your answer…it starts with your date of birth, gender, and health class.

Determining Your Rate or Risk Class

If you’re in good health, you may assume that you’ll automatically qualify for a “preferred best” rate class, but with some companies, an unfavorable family health history or a dangerous hobby may make you a standard risk, or even uninsurable.

For the most part, applicants in good health without a high-risk occupation or hobby, will probably qualify for a preferred rate class. However, with some companies, a family history of strokes, heart attacks, diabetes, or cancer may drop you to a “standard” risk class.

In these less-common situations, shopping the market and comparing rates from multiple companies could save you a lot of money on your life insurance. However, most life insurance companies are more concerned with an applicant health than their family’s health history.

How Does My Health Affect My Rates?

Below we’ve listed the underwriting guidelines for a handful of companies that tend to be more lenient with unfavorable family health history. As we mentioned earlier, applying with the right company makes a huge difference.

Preferred Best

  • No cigarette usage within 5 years
  • Cholesterol of 220 or less (with or without medication)
  • Blood pressure of 85/135 (with or without medication)
  • No serious health issues
  • No more than 25-30 pounds overweight

Preferred

  • No cigarette usage within 3 years
  • Cholesterol of 250 or less (with or without medication)
  • Blood pressure of 85/135 (with or without medication)
  • No serious health issues
  • No more than 30-40 pounds overweight

Standard Plus

  • No cigarette usage within 12 months
  • Cholesterol of 300 or less (with or without medication)
  • Blood pressure of 140/90 (with or without medication)
  • Some minor health issues
  • No more than 40-50 pounds overweight

Standard

  • No cigarette usage within 12 months
  • Cholesterol of 300 or less (with or without medication)
  • Blood pressure of 140/90 (with or without medication
  • Average health with age-related health issues
  • No more than 50-60 pounds overweight
*If you smoke cigarettes, you’ll probably fall into one of the two categories below. Tobacco users that do not smoke cigarettes but use cigars, e-cigarettes, chew, snuff, dip, or patches may qualify for a non-tobacco rate class with a few insurers.

Preferred Tobacco

  • Daily cigarette usage acceptable
  • Cholesterol of 250 or less (with or without medication)
  • Blood pressure of 85/135 (with or without medication)
  • No serious health issues
  • No more than 30-40 pounds overweight

Standard Tobacco

  • Daily cigarette usage acceptable
  • Cholesterol of 300 or less (with or without medication)
  • Blood pressure of 140/90 (with or without medication)
  • Average health with age-related health issues
  • No more than 50-60 pounds overweight
Please note: These guidelines are not “industry standard”. Home and auto insurance companies like State Farm or Farmers are not nearly as lenient with their underwriting guidelines.

What About My Dangerous Hobby or Occupation?

Truth be told, to life insurance companies, most occupations and hobbies are not dangerous. If you ride a motorcycle, are a police officer, or even if you’re a police officer that rides a motorcycle, no problem!

If you dismantle bombs for the military or jump off mountains in a wingsuit, however, you may not be insurable. Flying any type of experiential aircraft is a big no-no, but commercial pilots usually have no problem getting insured.

Hobbies like scuba diving for up to 75 feet is just fine with most companies, and sitting at a desk does not make you a high-risk for life insurance. In general, most life insurance companies will overlook the average person’s hobbies and occupation.

How Much Will My Life Insurance Cost Me?

If you’ve been able to accurately estimate your rate class, and you’re not a member of the SWAT team, you can get a rough idea of how much your life insurance will cost, without speaking to an agent.

However, if you decide that want to apply, you’ll eventually have to speak to someone... We enjoy showing actual rates to our potential clients upfront because 80% of Americans grossly overestimate the cost of their life insurance.

Are You Willing to Take A Medical Exam?

If you’re willing to take a free exam, you may be able to save on the cost of your life insurance. This is especially true if you have a few serious health issues, or if you are over the age of 60. If you do not want to take an exam, please skip to the next section, no medical exam life insurance.

No-Exam Term Life Insurance

No-exam term life insurance is ideal for truck drivers, executives who are on the go, world travelers, and people who would rather avoid getting poked by a needle. If you don’t have time for an exam, or would rather avoid one altogether, no exam term life insurance is probably your best option.

If you have serious health issues, or have been declined for life insurance before, avoiding an exam may not be in your best interest. Every term life insurance company will review your records with the Medical Information Bureau and your prescription history before approving an application.

To avoid a potential decline, we recommend calling to speak with an expert, toll-free at: 855-247-9555. Some companies are a lot more lenient with specific health issues than others, and we’ve helped our clients secure affordable coverage even when other companies have said “No.”
