Ladder Life Insurance is a relatively new insurance company founded in January 2017, and they offer level instant term life insurance online to those between ages 20 and 60. Ladder issues policies directly through Fidelity Security life Insurance Company, a life insurance company founded in 1959 that has an A- (Excellent) rating from A.M. Best.
Traditionally, when you apply for life insurance, it takes 4 to 8 weeks to hear back after you submit your application. With instant term life insurance, the application process is done completely online, takes less than 20 minutes to complete, and you’ll receive an instant decision on whether or not your application was accepted. No life insurance agent or waiting time required!
Instead of requiring a medical exam to assess your overall health like traditional life insurance policies, companies like Ladder who offer instant life insurance will electronically review your Medical Information Bureau records, attending physician’s statements, prescription history, driving and criminal records to evaluate your insurability and overall risk to the company. If you’re approved, coverage starts immediately.
To qualify for instant coverage with Ladder Life, you must meet the following criteria:
- Are between ages 20 and 60
- Are a U.S. Citizen or have lived in the U.S. for at least 2 years
- Reside in a state they are licensed and operating in (every state except New York)
Ladder offers term life policy lengths of 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 years, and coverage options between $100,000 and $8,000,000. Keep in mind that if you are in average or below average health and/or applying for a policy for more than $1 million of coverage, you may have to complete a medical exam before Ladder issues you a policy.
Ladder does have some term length restrictions, depending on your age. Your current age plus the term length cannot exceed 70-years-old. To help you understand further, see the chart taken from Ladder’s website below.

Another great advantage about Ladder is the company allows you to increase or decrease your policy size instantly online, instead of having to cancel your policy and re-apply for a new one.
Since term life insurance isn’t designed to last your entire lifetime, you will most likely outlive your policy. Its main purpose is to provide affordable coverage for a set amount of time, and secure life events such as a mortgage or children’s education expenses.
That being said, there are still options if you decide you still need coverage once you’re older. Many life insurance companies, including Ladder, offer a “conversion option” on their term policies.
This means that you have the opportunity to convert some or all of your policy to permanent coverage. You have this option throughout the duration of your term or up until age 70, whichever occurs first. Do note that if you choose to convert your policy, your premiums will increase.
Can I cancel my policy?
Yes, you can cancel your policy at any time without any fees or penalties. Just give your independent agent a call to start the process. It’s important to note that if you cancel your policy, you will have to undergo the application process again if you want to re-apply for coverage.
Below we have provided sample life insurance rates that Ladder currently offers to help you estimate the cost of your policy.

Think Ladder sounds like the right company for you? Great! Let’s get started.
Just like we spoke about previously, when you apply online, you can expect to be asked about your age, lifestyle, health status, and personal and family health history – all off which will be confirmed by a third-party vendor such as the Medical Information Bureau (MIB) to confirm that the information you entered is correct.
If everything checks out and Ladder thinks you’re a good match, then you’ll be issued a policy and can start receiving coverage immediately. Cue the Staples, “That was easy!” button.
